GETTING UP
The Ways Up Corcovado, Compared
Cog train, authorised van or your own legs — the three routes to the summit differ in more than price, and the differences shape how your whole day runs.
Check dates and availability ↗The cog train from Cosme Velho
The Trem do Corcovado is the classic and most atmospheric approach. From the station at Cosme Velho, a metre-gauge rack railway climbs 3.8 kilometres up through the forest of Tijuca National Park, with gradients reported as steep as thirty per cent, reaching the upper terminal in about twenty minutes. Trains have run to the summit since 1884, so the line is older than the statue it now serves by nearly half a century. Its ticket bundles the return journey with admission to the monument, which is the single biggest source of booking confusion — people buy the train and then look for a separate entry ticket that, on this route, does not exist. Capacity is limited to a few hundred passengers an hour, so in high season it sells out.
The authorised vans
The official vans are the flexible alternative, run by the Paineiras-Corcovado concessionaire under agreement with the national park. They board at Praça do Lido in Copacabana, at Largo do Machado, and at the Paineiras Visitor Center itself. A detail that catches people out: from the first two points you ride to Paineiras and then transfer to a second van for the final climb, so it is not always a single seamless trip. As with the train, the van ticket includes monument entry. Crucially, these are the only vans permitted on the park road — a driver approaching you outside a hotel offering a lift to the statue is not authorised, and private cars are stopped at Paineiras and cannot continue.
Walking the trails
You can walk up, whatever some guides claim. Two official trails exist. The Parque Lage to Corcovado route runs roughly 3.8 kilometres with about 710 metres of ascent, threading up through dense forest. The newer Paineiras–Corcovado trail takes in the Mirante Cartão Postal, a glass viewing platform, on the way. Both are genuinely rewarding for anyone reasonably fit, but the national park advises against them for children under about ten or people unused to hiking, and access from Parque Lage closes at 15:00 — start late and you will be turned back. One more thing walkers routinely miss: the trail is free, but the monument is not. You still buy entry when you reach the top.

Which suits you
If it is your first visit and you want the postcard experience, the train is hard to beat: the climb through the forest is part of the pleasure, and there is a reason it is the image people carry away. If you value flexible departure times or you are travelling as a group, the vans give you more choice of boarding point and schedule, though the transfer at Paineiras adds a step. If you are fit, unhurried and curious about the forest itself, walking up is the quietest and most immersive way to arrive — you earn the view. Many visitors mix modes, riding one way and walking or taking a van the other, which is entirely possible so long as you mind the trail's 15:00 cut-off.
The rule all three share
Whichever way you go up, the summit itself is ticketed, and the transport concessions that bundle entry are the reason the ticketing feels confusing. Buy a train or authorised-van ticket and admission is already inside it. Walk up and you pay entry separately at the top. Nobody needs two transport tickets, and nobody riding the official train or vans needs a separate entry ticket on top — the muddle almost always comes from not reading what a booking already covers. Settle which route you are taking first, confirm what that specific ticket includes, and the rest of the day plans itself. Just remember that transport tends to stop running hours before the monument closes, so the last practical time to start up is earlier than you might assume.
